How do we make sure that the light within us is not dark?
We need to be in a community of believers that support our faith and we support others.
Going to church
Being part of a Bible study
Being part of a prayer group
Read scripture
Pray often
Ideas for Grandchildren
**disclaimer: I know that your grandchildren are all different ages and the activities may not apply. Most of the activities I suggest can be modified for different age groups and for whatever circumstances you have.**
*Discuss Luke 11:27-28 with your grandchildren. Read it out of a children’s Bible if you have one). How can they make sure their body is full of light? What are some things that make it dark - anger, jealousy, sadness - how to deal with those feelings in appropriate ways. What does it look like when their body is full of light?
*Make Luke 11:27-28 a memory verse. Encourage your grandchildren to memorize the verse and check in with them to see how it is going. Maybe have a special gift or a special time with them after they memorize it. If they don’t live close by, you can do this over FaceTime or similar video conferencing service.
*Craft project: Make a paper lantern
(for grandkids suggested ages: 5 - 10)
*materials needed: 2 pieces of construction paper or other colored paper), stapler, scissors, markers
Cut 2 strips down the long side of one of the pieces of paper - set aside
Fold the 2nd piece of paper in half lengthwise - so you have a long and skinny rectangle.
Draw pencil marks from the folded edge (stop about 1inch) almost to the open edge. The pencil marks should be about 1 - 2 inches apart.
Cut on the pencil marks - STOP about an inch from the open end.
Open it up and roll it to connect both of the ends. Staple the edges together.
On the strips that you cut from the first paper, write down the Bible verse on it and then glue it around the top and bottom of the lantern or just use 1 piece to make a handle. Decorate it if your grandchild wishes.
*Modifications - either you or your grandchild can do the writing or they can draw a picture
on the strips.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for my beautiful grandchildren. I pray that they are a light to others and that there is no darkness in myself or in them. Help me to shine this light into the world.
