Helping Our Grandchildren Overcome Fear with Faith
Grandchildren face many fears, especially when they are young. They may be afraid of spiders, the dark, trying something new, making friends, or not doing well in school. While these fears are common, they can feel overwhelming to a child.
As Christian grandmothers, we have the wonderful privilege of pointing our grandchildren to Jesus—the One who gives courage, peace, and hope. Here are a few simple ways we can help them face their fears with faith:
Share and Memorize Bible Verses
God's Word reminds us that we are never alone.
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
Encourage your grandchildren to memorize verses like this so they can remember God's promises whenever they feel afraid.
Remind Them Who They Are in Christ
Help your grandchildren understand their identity in Christ. They are deeply loved by God, created with purpose, and never forgotten by Him. Knowing who they are in Christ gives them confidence to face life's challenges.
Pray with Them
Ask your grandchildren what they are afraid of. Listen carefully, then pray with them about those specific fears. When children learn to bring their worries to God, they begin to trust that He is always with them.
Share Bible Stories of Courage
Read Bible stories that show God's faithfulness during frightening situations. Daniel in the lions' den is a wonderful example of trusting God in the face of fear. These stories remind children that God never leaves His people.
Never Underestimate the Power of Prayer
One of the greatest gifts we can give our grandchildren is our prayers. Whether we see them every day, every week, only on holidays, or rarely at all, we can faithfully bring them before the Lord.
Pray that they will come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, grow in their faith, and experience God's peace whenever fear tries to take hold of their hearts. God hears every prayer, and there is no distance that can keep Him from working in the lives of the grandchildren we love.
