A Simple Bedtime Prayer Your Grandchildren will Remember

Sometimes it is hard to think about how to teach our grandchildren to pray - sometimes I feel the same way. Of course, many of us grew up with this bedtime prayer:

Now I lay me down to sleep,

  I pray to the Lord, my soul to keep;

  If I should die before I wake,

  I pray to the Lord my soul to take.

A variation that I taught my own children (and a little nicer than talking about death before going to bed which is a lot and not necessarily conducive to a good night sleep)

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray to the Lord my soul to keep;

May angels watch me through the night,

and wake me with the morning light.

But sometimes, we want something a little more personal. So, here is an example of a prayer I wrote:

Dear God,

Thank you for the day and the night,

Thank you for the morning light.

Thank you for the birds and bees,

Thank you for all of the trees.

{I would then take a moment to pray for specific people in their lives.}

Amen
